Columnaris disease
(Tail rot, mouth rot, gill rot)
Symptoms
The fin become white and turbid, congestion, and necrotic.
At beginning, top of the fin becomes white and turbid, and then the symptom was looks like melt. If fish moves forward, the fin will split and get tattered.
Cause
It is caused by the bacteria called Flavobacterium columnare.
This bacterium infects not only the gill and around mouth, but also the fin, the disease also called gill rot disease or mouth rot disease, depending on the infection parts.
Flavobacterium columnare is a kind of bacteria which can living in raising environment, and then infect the fish from wound or thread when its immune system is weak.
At the beginning, a lot of Flavobacterium columnare increase at the fin where become white and turbid, their structure of fin is disrupted and getting white and turbid by the bacteria.
The melting of the fin is also due to the action of powerful protein degrading enzymes produced by Flavobacterium columnare.
The bacteria can’t increase if the sufficient oxygen can’t be provided, although the infection area won’t get to their internal organ, the disease occurs easily on the gill or fin where oxygen can be provided easily.
Countermeasure
The treatment is to change the water about 1/2~1/3 and take a medical bath with appropriate medicine.
If Saprolegnia also happen to affected area, please use Green F, Green F liquid, Agten, Agten powder, Methylene blue aqueous solution.
The fins are regenerable in the early stage, but regeneration becomes difficult if the condition progresses to the root.
Please prioritize early detection and early treatment.
